The Rationale Behind the Hadith on the ‘Sujud Sahwi’: A Comparative Study of the Derivation Methods of the Founding Imams of the Schools of Islamic Jurisprudence

Abstract

Sujud sahwi is a prostration performed by a person twice because he forgot to do one of the pillars or sunnah of prayer. This prostration is called sujud sahwi and functions to cover the lack of prayer. In its implementation, there were differences of opinion among madzhab of thought scholars in making the arguments for the hadith of sujud sahwi. Some scholars of the sect take the hadith of prostrating for sahwi before taslim, while the other half take the hadith of prostrating for sahwi after taslim. This difference applies because different scholars take hadith as evidence. The research question in this article is how the division of the hadith on prostration of sahwi in the hadith books is a postulate among madzhab scholars and how this madzhab scholars explain the understanding of hadith in determining the law on prostration of sahwi. In this research the author used a qualitative research method in type of library research. From the research results it was found that there are nine main points of hadith narration regarding prostration of sahwi. However, not all madzhab sectarian scholars take this hadith as their reference in interpreting the law due to differences of opinion in producing the law of prostration.
